Under the Wire The Bodyguards Book 5 Cindy Gerard 9780312981044 Books

I wasn't sure about reading this book because the MC was not a Garrett. Sure I read Wilson's book (non-Garrett) but I liked Wilson when I met him and Manny just didn't seem an interesting character for me when I met him in Ethan's book (To the Brink). But because this is a series and I have a thing for reading books in order, I decided to give it a try.

'Under the Wire' is a story divided in two parts:

In the first one we get to meet Manny when he's still living in Nicaragua and is part of the Contra War. It was boring. I didn't care much about Manny and when it came to Manny meeting Lily, I cared even less. And then when I found out Manny was 18 and Lily was so much older than him I almost stopped reading because I'm not a fan of stories where the hero is much younger than the heroine.

Somehow, I convinced myself to not stop reading (a part of me was also waiting to see the Garretts), and when the second part starts and we see Manny in present day, I was glad I had continued.

The story finally became interesting and all because Lily shows up again with a big secret and a huge problem. I forgot the age difference and instead just focused on the characters. Them along with the story won me.

Manny was no longer that same 18-year-old boy. He was a man hurt by his past and confused by his present and future. I really liked him. Lily was not bad either. I liked her strength in the middle of chaos. And together? Though they were not mind-blowing, I liked them.

Even more so, I liked that Ethan, Dallas and Darcy became an important part of the story, that we got to see their POVs and not just hear them mentioning.

I sure missed Nolan and Jillian *sniff sniff* but I'm glad they got to have a mini cameo on the Epilogue which I almost hated because I couldn't believe it wouldn't have a crocket game haha. Thank God for Eve!

And now…

Now I cannot wait to finally read Dallas and Amy's story. I've been dying for it ever since the third book and now I'm closer to it.

OVERALL:

'Under the Wire' was a surprising great addition to The Bodyguards series but more than enjoying it because of the romance, I enjoyed it for the twists and turns the suspense plot had.

Manny Ortega was a surprise after not finding him interesting before. I like him now. But yeah, my Garrett men still hold the number 1 place in my heart.

STORY BRIEF
Seventeen years ago, Lily was in Nicaragua working as a nurse and had a passionate one-week affair with Manny. They fell in love. Manny was spying for the Contras by pretending to be a Sandinista soldier. He was then kidnapped by the Sandinistas. They told him that Lily informed on him. He escaped and has hated Lily ever since. After Manny was kidnapped, Lily tried to find him and was told that he died in battle. She left Nicaragua and later discovered she was pregnant. She raised Manny's son Adam alone.

It is now seventeen years later, Adam goes to Sri Lanka on a service trip for the summer. A military group kidnaps Adam and the family he is staying with. Lily recently learned that Manny was alive. She can't believe he never tried to find her. Lily goes to Manny for help. Manny is currently a policeman in Boston. He contacts his military friends, and a small group of them go to Sri Lanka to rescue Adam. Lily goes with them. For quite a while, Manny is full of hate for Lily.

REVIEWER'S OPINION
I enjoyed the alpha-type military guys. I liked both main characters. Their dislike for each other and ultimate resolution was handled pretty well. I enjoyed their finding each other again through the crisis. Sex scenes were like those in most romantic suspense novels. They were ok, not bad.

I was disappointed with one instance of heroine stupidity. But it was minor and short lived, and it did provide an excuse for the guys to do something neat to save her. So in the spirit of fiction, I accepted it. But the author could have done the same scene without heroine stupidity. Another soldier could have come out of hiding and grabbed her instead of her running toward a soldier - or something else.

I was disappointed that the author never answered the big question from the beginning of the book of who informed on Manny or why he was taken by the Sandinistas.

The author used a lot of Spanish phrases which was fine. But I was impressed that after each Spanish phrase, the author put the translation in italic. Thank you. That works well. Too many authors don't do this.

When they met, Lily was 28 and Manny was 18. He had been a soldier for a while in a troubled environment which had an aging effect. Other than describing their ages, the story didn't do anything with the age difference, which was fine with me. I had no preference about that.

OTHER BOOKS
So far I've read three Cindy Gerard books. This is my favorite. The others are
3 stars. To The Brink
2 stars. Show No Mercy

DATA
Story length 329 pages. Swearing language strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language strong. Number of sex scenes 6. Estimated number of sex scene pages 16. Setting 17 years ago and current day Nicaragua, Sri Lanka, and the U.S. Copyright 2006. Genre romantic suspense, older woman younger man.
The Bodyguards series has been one of my favorites for a while, however, I didn't really expect to like this one. I knew this book featured a much older heroine which is not a genre I typically read. I simply decided to give it a try because I didn't want to be behind in the series. I'm so glad I did. It didn't read at all like I thought it would, and the age difference wasn't the focus of the story. Lily and Manny had met years before at an emotional time for Lily. Their affair was brief but brilliantly passionate and ended suddenly with no resolution for either of them. Now, many years and complications later, Lily needs Manny's help despite his extremely negative feelings toward her. Exigent circumstances compel Manny to offer his assistance. Though he agrees to help, he does not agree to be friendly, and his resentment rubs off on his team members leaving Lily an outcast. As they travel across the world to rescue a kidnapped family and a missing exchange student, Lily holds her own. I love how strong and independent she was despite being hurt over and over by the way she was treated. I also love the moment when Manny realizes he was wrong about Lily. Even when it looks like they will be successful in their mission, the future of their relationship remains unclear. I got caught up in their back and forth emotions, their passion, and their struggle to let the past go. This was a great addition to a great series!
