I purchased this book thinking it was contemporary romance, but I feel it would be better shelved as erotica.

Amelia works as a concierge at a hotel in New York and lives with Jay, her boyfriend. She works very hard, and has been looking forward to a vacation in Hawaii that she has been paying for for the past year. The day before she is set to leave with Jay, her boss announces he has lost an employee and she must cancel her vacation. When she refuses, he fires her.

Then, it gets worse. Arriving home early, Amelia stumbles in on Jay and her supposed friend and barista who made her coffee every morning. They are in bed and hard at it. Amelia decides to pack her bags, take her fortune-teller aunt with her, and go to Hawaii anyway.

Upon arriving in Hawaii, the exhausted Amelia tries to take a swim in the ocean, nearly drowning when she's pulled out by the undertow. She's saved by a beach bum who gives diving lessons at the resort and goes by the name of "Dude." There is instant attraction and a steamy affair ensues. What Amelia does not know is that "Dude" is actually one of the owners of the resort--she hates rich guys, so Samuel keeps his identity a secret from her.

The description of the Hawaiian scenery and glimpses of their culture added a nice dimension. But I felt the story was rushed, only slowing down for the numerous, graphic sex scenes. The "black moment" was flat--we never really doubted that Amelia and Samuel would end up together. And certain plot points, including the final whereabouts of Amelia's aunt, were left untied.

Since I read contemporary romance for the story, not just the sex, I was somewhat disappointed by this title. But if you're looking for a sizzling-hot, quick and entertaining read, you will love Life's a Beach.

Life a Beach Hawaii Heat Book 1 eBook Jamie K Schmidt Reviews

Thou it begins in New York the real intrigue begins happening in Hawaii. Shows you what a woman can do when she has passion and a strong sense of conviction....
On to book II.
I loved this book so much... I got this as a free book a.d loved e very minute of it... very much worth any money you need to pay...
Loved this book! A Hawaiian getaway perfect for cold March in the North. A sexy beach romance with a strong, smart female heroine, a hunky beach bum who's not who he seems, a palm reading aunt and a run down tropical hotel that needs a down-on-her-luck New Yorker to make her sparkle again.
This book....I don't even know where to begin. One basically starts off with a rebound with a stranger (this I can look over). Two LOTS of sex. Like almost to the too much point. Three bad guy becomes good guy but still bad guy?? Ugh. Would not recommend this book. Just not believable at all and the story line seemed frazzled.
Light-hearted comedic story line where the characters blend well together. Emily, trying to rebound from a failed love affair, is a clear headed babe who knows what she wants and does not hesitate to go after it .The Hawaii setting and local characters coupled with Emily's aunt Zarafina's fortune telling antics add a little more flavor to the story line. There is passion galore, for those who enjoy a lot of spice in their novels, but it does not out weigh the overall story line. Easy read for a weekend and a brake from watching football.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book. It was a light, easy reading that was engaging from the beginning and hard to put down. I read the book in one day. The descriptions of the island, the local culture and the dialog between the characters was awesome.
A lot of reviews mention the sex scenes...for good and for bad. In my opinion, they were boring. The were not "hot". The were not sexy. They were not even erotic. They were just....very explicit. In my opinion, they lent nothing to the story and I found myself bored getting through the couple of pages before the story picked up again. It's almost as if the story and the sex scenes were written by two different people. If you like that sort of thing, you'll love this book. But specifically because of the explicit sex scenes I cannot see myself recommending it to say... a coworker, or acquaintance or even my mother....and that's a shame because it really is a fun, romantic story. I do have to agree with another review though...I also felt like the ending was lacking.... you're right in the middle of some drama and action then it's done and happily ever after in like...3 pages, tied up in a neat little bow.
Despite a heavy dose of erotica that I normally would not read, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Yes, the sex scenes are graphic, but they are intertwined with such tender moments that I found myself reliving a time when young love is that sweet mix of raging hormones and letting your heart be vulnerable even when there is no guarantee of what will be. Speaking of following your heart, the author's theme of a young woman's determination to find "home," and herself, in saving a dilapidated hotel, reminded me of an old-fashioned story. Unlike one reviewer, I found the premise of a down-on-her-luck main character who uses a unique opportunity to shine as a hotel manager after leaving her low-level job as a hotel hostess, totally believable.

Jamie Schmidt's writing is smooth and provocative, a quick, fun read for the beach or anytime you want a get-away that makes you feel as if you've had a vacation from life. Although I've never been to Hawaii, I could practically feel the sand on my skin, the flavor of local hospitality, as well as the political tension--so well done. I was in awe of the "black velvet" sky--no wonder why Jamie is a Best-Selling author.
